Medicare in North Topeka
What North Topeka residents should know
Most care for North Topeka residents runs through two systems across the river. Stormont Vail Hospital sits on SW 10th Avenue, and The University of Kansas Health System St. Francis Campus sits on SW 7th Street. Stormont Vail also runs a clinic on NW Fielding Road, closer to home for many north-side families. Veterans can use the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center on SW Gage Boulevard.
That split shapes your plan choice. A Medicare Advantage plan works through a network. If your family doctor is with Stormont Vail and your specialist is at St. Francis, check that both are in the plan before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works another way. Plan G or Plan N lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. You pay a monthly premium for that freedom. With a Supplement, you also buy a separate Part D drug plan, so check that your drugs and pharmacy are on its list.
Getting to appointments takes some planning. Topeka Metro buses serve the north side, and riders on Medicare can apply for a Reduced Fare ID. Bring a copy of your Medicare card and a photo ID to Quincy Street Station, or call 785-783-7000 to apply by mail. Riders who cannot use the regular bus can apply for Lift Service, Topeka Metro's door-to-door rides, at the same number. Papan's Landing Senior Center on NW Paramore also lists medical and shopping rides for North Topeka and Oakland seniors.
Local help is close by. Papan's Landing Senior Center serves meals and runs programs for older adults on the north side. For free one-on-one Medicare counseling, SHICK counselors answer at 800-860-5260, and Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging handles meals, in-home help and caregiver support.
